چکیده

In the binary evolutionary optimization framework, two mutation operators are theoretically investigated. For both the standard mutation, in which all bits are ipped independently with the same probability, and the 1-bit-ip mutation, which ips exactly one bit per bitstring, the statistical distribution of the rst hitting times of the target are thoroughly computed (expectation and variance) up to terms of order l (the size of the bitstrings) in two distinct situations: without any selection, or with the deterministic (1+1)-ES selection on the OneMax problem. In both cases, the 1-bit-ip mutation convergence time is smaller by a constant (in terms of l) multi-plicative factor. These results extend to the case of multiple independent optimizers.

Asymptotics of posteriors for binary branching processes

We compute the posterior distributions of the initial population and parameter of binary branching processes, in the limit of a large number of generations. We compare this Bayesian procedure with a more näıve one, based on hitting times of some random walks. In both cases, central limit theorems are available, with explicit variances.

Vienna 2013: DJH Lectures. Some References

D J Higham, September, 2013 Here are some pointers to the literature. This is not intended to be a comprehensive list, and is biased towards my own research interests. Lecture 1, Gillespie: • [5, 6] are classic references for stochastic simulation, [10] gives a gentle introduction • [7] introduced tau-leaping, [1] gives a rigorous analysis • [17] covers modeling and simulation issues at various...

How Slow, or Fast, Are Standard Random Walks? - Analyses of Hitting and Cover Times on Tree

Random walk is a powerful tool, not only for modeling, but also for practical use such as the Internet crawlers. Standard random walks on graphs have been well studied; It is well-known that both hitting time and cover time of a standard random walk are bounded by O(n) for any graph with n vertices, besides the bound is tight for some graphs. Ikeda et al. (2003) provided “β-random walk,” which ...

Entropy Estimation and Fluctuations of Hitting and Recurrence times for Gibbsian Sources

Motivated by entropy estimation from chaotic time series, we provide a comprehensive analysis of hitting times of cylinder sets in the setting of Gibbsian sources. We prove two strong approximation results from which we easily deduce pointwise convergence to entropy, lognormal fluctuations, precise large deviation estimates and an explicit formula for the hitting-time multifractal spectrum. It ...
